50 years of SAIL,
6 facts about SAIL 2025.

Soon SAIL will be back, after the missed edition in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, we can’t wait to welcome ships to the IJ after a decade of rest. SAIL is one of the world’s biggest maritime events, attracting millions of visitors. On top of this, SAIL celebrates Amsterdam’s rich nautical history and connection with the sea. In this blog, I list the best facts about SAIL so you don’t miss a thing.

1. SAIL 2025 and Amsterdam 750,

The tenth edition of SAIL runs concurrently with the 750th birthday of Amsterdam. HYear-round activities topped off by SAIL. In this year, we look both hugely forward, with the Future Days. 2. Sustainability stands central,

The organisation calls attention to sustainable innovations in the maritime sector. Such as clean energy and environmentally friendly shipping, for example. There is even a special parade for this during SAIL: the Green Ships parade. Workshops and lectures on sustainable innovations in the maritime sector will also be organised during SAIL, allowing visitors to the event to learn about sustainable technologies through interactive exhibitions and demonstrations.

3. A diverse program,

SAIL Amsterdam is more than just a maritime event, it has an extensive agenda and there is something for everyone. Such as: Live performances, Fireworks shows (every night), Workshops and lectures, Maritime art exhibitions and much more. There is something for everyone!

4. SAIL shines light on Amsterdam and her communities,

Besides shining light on Amsterdam its nautical history, SAIL also ensures that Amsterdammers are actively brought together.  For example, through its inclusivity programme, which focuses on accessibility for people with disabilities. Together with collaborations with schools for educational projects & youth programmes, they make it an event that inspires young and old.

5. Maritime heritage,

With more than 700 ships set to take part in SAIL, some real gems cannot be missing either. After all, SAIL is known for its celebration of Holland’s centuries-old connection with the sea. Ships such as ‘Klippers’, ‘Botters’, and ‘Tjalken’ that were once used in Dutch fishing and trade can be admired on these days. But the ships that really steal the show are of course the Tall-Ships. Large, traditionally rigged sailing ships, often tens of metres tall, are among the most iconic parts of SAIL. With ships from all over the world coming here, in Amsterdam, to celebrate their history. Prominent ships such as: The Sedov (RUS), Christian Radich (NRG), Amerigo Vespucci (ITA) and many more… More good news! Many ships will open their decks to the public so that you and your fellow interested parties can have a look at them.
